Topic Information
Summer 1
Below you will find an outline of what we are covering across the curriculum:
๐ English
Our English lessons are based around exciting, rich texts that inspire creativity and a love of reading.
This half term in English, Oak Class will be developing a range of exciting writing skills. We will begin by exploring persuasive writing, where the children will learn how to convince a reader using powerful language and key features. They will then apply these skills by creating their own engaging travel leaflets, designed to inspire others to visit a chosen destination.
Following this, the children will be introduced to haiku poetry. They will explore the structure and rhythm of this traditional form, using descriptive language to capture moments in nature and express their ideas creatively.
Finally, we will move on to narrative writing, focusing on fables. The children will read and analyse well-known fables before writing their own stories that include a clear moral. This unit will help them develop their storytelling skills, character creation, and understanding of themes.
Alongside these units, children will take part in daily handwriting and spelling sessions to help strengthen accuracy, fluency, and confidence in their writing.
๐ข Maths
This half term in Maths, Oak Class will be focusing on fractions, time and decimals. The children will begin by developing their understanding of fractions, including adding and subtracting fractions. They will explore how fractions work and build confidence in solving a range of problems.
We will also be learning about time, where children will practise reading and understanding minutes, hours, days, months and years. They will develop their ability to solve real-life problems involving time.
Finally, the children will explore decimals, including tenths and hundredths, and will learn how these link to fractions such as halves and quarters. This will help them build a deeper understanding of number and place value.
Throughout the term, children will have daily arithmetic sessions, as well as practise their times tables fluency every day to help them feel confident and well prepared for the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC).
๐งช Science – Electricity and Circuits

It highlights key vocabulary and concepts, including different electrical appliances and their power sources, working safely with electricity and an introduction to electrical components. The resource also explores different materials and their electrical conductivity. It is perfect for consolidating essential knowledge and fostering an understanding of simple electrical circuits.
๐จ Art– Drawing: tone, texture and proportion
This unit is designed to support pupils as they develop realistic drawing techniques by focusing on tone, texture, proportion and composition.
