Maths Curriculum Statement
Mathematics teaches children how to make sense of the world around them through developing their ability to calculate reason and solve problems. It enables children to understand relationships and patterns in both number and space in their everyday lives. Through their growing knowledge and understanding, children learn to appreciate the contribution made by many cultures to the development and application of mathematics.
Intent
At Kensworth we recognise that Mathematics is essential to everyday life. We aim to provide high quality maths lessons with a mastery approach so that all children:
- have a wide range of strategies to enable them to be confident with number/ reasoning and problem solving.
- are provided with ‘real life’ contexts in order to be able to use and apply outside the classroom in everyday life.
- develop a love a maths. We want our children to have a thirst for learning and to want to be challenged.
- develop a ‘can do’ attitude.
- have a quick recall of number facts and times tables.
- have a good high level of understanding.
Implementation
At Kensworth we follow the National Curriculum and use the White Rose Maths Scheme which focuses on problem solving and reasoning. By working in small steps it ensures skills are embedded before moving onto to the next unit. Spending longer on mastering key maths topics like number builds the children’s confidence.
Children are encouraged to use concrete manipulatives to aid concept progression using CPA (concrete, pictorial, abstract) leading to mastery including problem solving and reasoning tasks. Teachers ensure consistency in work layout across the school. Maths working walls have been implemented across the school to support children’s learning and are updated in line with current maths topics. As mathematics gets more challenging, we will encourage and model resilience and determination, skills and values that we teach and promote at Kensworth. We will work together and share ideas to plan and deliver high quality, active lessons, which motivate and challenge the children and meet each individual need.
Impact
Children will have developed the knowledge, skills and understanding to help them be a successful in our modern world. Children’s skills will have progressed to enable them to not only have met the requirements of the National Curriculum but to also have a developed a good number sense where they enjoy exploring numbers and increased their reasoning and problem solving skills. Children are actively using the Working Walls in classrooms to help them with their work in maths. We will see that Children’s attitude to maths has improved, they want to be challenged and their perseverance building. Children will show confidence in believing they will achieve.
Here at Kensworth, all children are taught maths in their classes, with a mixture of objectives for their year groups. In all classes we use the White Rose maths schemes of work, which have been devised for mixed year group classes. This scheme of work builds the child's skills and knowledge through small step teaching. Each theme or concept is broken down into sequential lessons giving the children, firstly the knowledge they need and then building on that to give them reasoning and problem solving skills for the concept taught, allowing them to apply their knowledge.
