Early Mathematics

Very young children are natural problem solvers.  They learn to walk and talk by having a desire to attain their goal, by mimicking others, by trying things out, by making lots of mistakes and adjusting strategies accordingly, and by gradually gaining in confidence.  (Woodham and Pennant, NRICH 2014)

We believe that Early Years mathematics should be predominantly about children demonstrating mathematical thinking during their chosen activities and making connections that build understanding and foster curiosity.

We use the White Rose Maths programme, which focuses on using concrete resources to teach and embed early number sense before moving onto the pictorial and finally the abstract.

We would urge you to talk about mathematics with your child during everyday activities where children learn in context to lay the foundations for concrete understanding.
