Below you will find an outline of what we are covering across the curriculum:
๐ English
Our English lessons are based around exciting, rich texts that inspire creativity and a love of reading. This half term, we are focusing on Arthur and the Golden Rope, where children will be inspired to plan and write their own graphic novel. We will also explore persuasive writing through the text The King Who Banned the Dark. Later in the half term, children will enjoy working with free verse poetry, inspired by A Small Dragon. Alongside these units, children will continue to develop their reading comprehension, spelling, punctuation, and grammar skills.
๐ข Maths
This half term, the children will be developing their knowledge of place value. Year 3 will focus on numbers within 1,000, while Year 4 will work within 10,000. They will learn to estimate, compare and order numbers, as well as practise rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000. We will also be exploring Roman Numerals. Arithmetic skills will be strengthened through daily practice, and children will use practical resources, number lines, and mental strategies to support their fluency and confidence in maths.
๐งช Science – Animals, including Humans: Movement and Nutrition
This unit is designed to support the children as they explore movement and nutrition. It highlights key vocabulary and concepts, including the human skeleton, joints, muscles and how they work together to enable movement. The resource also introduces vertebrates and invertebrates and explains the role of endoskeletons and exoskeletons. The children will learn about the seven essential nutrient groups needed for survival and the importance of a balanced diet.
๐จ Art – Prehistoric Painting
This unit explores prehistoric art, recreating the style of cave artists using charcoal and natural pigments. Pupils experiment with colour mixing, and creating large-scale artworks, enhancing both artistic skills and historical knowledge.
French
This unit is designed to support pupils as they begin to communicate using basic French greetings and simple conversational structures. It highlights key vocabulary and phrases such as bonjour, au revoir, je m’appelle, and comment ça va ?, along with responses expressing different feelings like ça va bien and ça va mal.
๐ History - Stone, Bronze or Iron Age?
This unit is designed to support pupils as they compare life in three key periods of prehistory, focusing on how communities developed over time. It introduces important vocabulary such as hunter-gatherers, settlement, trade, barter, archaeology, and tribe, and highlights the shift from nomadic lifestyles to organised settlements like Skara Brae. Pupils explore changes in technology, including the emergence of bronze and iron tools, and learn how trade evolved from bartering to the use of coins. A timeline on page 2 charts key developments from the Palaeolithic through to the Roman invasion, helping pupils understand chronology and historical context.
๐ป Computing
In Computing, children use the Purple Mash scheme of learning. Children will develop their skills in using technology safely and effectively, learning about coding, digital creativity, and online safety.
๐ต Music
In Music, our unit is Mamma Mia. Children will explore rhythm, melody, and musical expression through singing, playing instruments, and listening to a wide range of music.
๐ RE (Religious Education)
Our RE question this half term is: What kind of world did Jesus want? In this unit, pupils will learn about the concept of ‘Gospel’ which tells the story of the life and teaching of Jesus. They will learn about the calling of the first disciples and how Christians today try to follow Jesus. Pupils will find out about Jesus’ actions towards other people and what example these set for the actions of Christians today. Pupils will learn about links between the teachings within Bible and what the meaning of Jesus’ good news for Christians is. Later in the unit. They will learn about the parable of the Good Samaritan and the importance of charity within the lives of many..
๐งฉ PSHE
In this unit the children learn to recognise their self-worth and identify positive things about themselves and their achievements. They talk about new challenges and how to face them with positivity. The children talk about the need for rules and how these relate to rights and responsibilities. They talk about choices and consequences, working collaboratively and seeing things from other people’s points of view. The children talk about different feelings and the ability to recognise these feelings in themselves and others.
๐ PE (Physical Education)
Children will develop their fitness, coordination, teamwork, and skills through a variety of sports and physical activities. This half terms sports are tag rugby and football.
