With God by our side, we can move mountains

Topic Information

Below you will find an outline of what we are covering across the curriculum:

๐Ÿ“– English

Our English lessons are based around exciting, rich texts that inspire creativity and a love of reading.

This term, we will begin by exploring the poem A Small Dragon. As a piece of writing to entertain, this text introduces children to the features of free-verse poetry and encourages them to experiment with language, imagery, and structure. Inspired by the poem, the children will create their own free-verse poems, using curiosity and imagination to guide their writing.

We will then move on to a non-fiction unit, focusing on explanation texts. Using popular books such as Until I Met Dudley and Rosie Revere, Engineer, the children will explore how explanation texts work and the features that make them clear and engaging. This learning will support the children in designing and explaining their own inventions.

Later in the term, we will turn to narrative writing through the beautifully illustrated story Starbird. Children will study the text’s structure, language, and themes as inspiration for crafting their own narrative pieces.

Alongside these units, children also take part in daily handwriting and spelling sessions to strengthen accuracy, fluency, and confidence in their writing.

๐Ÿ”ข Maths

This term in maths, the children will build on what they already know about place value as we move into addition and subtraction. They’ll learn different methods to help them solve calculations, including adding and subtracting larger numbers, estimating sensible answers, and checking their work using inverse operations.

We will then move on to multiplication and division. The children will use practical and visual strategies—such as arrays, sharing and grouping—to help them understand and remember all the multiplication and division facts up to 12 × 12.

Later in the term, the children will explore the area of shapes, using hands-on activities to help them understand how area is calculated and compared.

Children will also be practising their times tables fluency daily throughout the term to help them feel confident and prepared for the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC).

๐Ÿงช Science – Materials: Rocks and Soil

This unit is designed to support the children as they explore rocks and soil. It highlights key vocabulary and concepts, including different types of rocks, their formation and their physical properties. The resource explains how soil is made from sediment, organic matter, water and air, and introduces drainage rates and sedimentation. It also explores how fossils are formed and studied by palaeontologists. It is perfect for consolidating essential knowledge and fostering an understanding of the natural processes that shape the Earth's surface.

๐ŸŽจ DT– Pavillions

This unit is designed to support the pupils as they explore the design and construction of pavilions, focusing on frame structures and cladding techniques. It introduces key vocabulary such as pavilion, frame structure, cladding, reinforce, and stable, helping the pupils understand how structures are built for strength and aesthetics. The pupils will also learn about design criteria and evaluation, ensuring their models meet functional and visual requirements.

French

This unit is designed to support pupils as they learn to describe everyday objects in French using adjectives for colour, size, and shape. It introduces core vocabulary such as rouge, bleu, grand, petit, un cercle, and un triangle, while clearly demonstrating how to construct accurate noun phrases. Pupils explore adjective placement and agreement—for example, placing size adjectives before the noun and colours after, as in un grand carré rouge (a big red square). It is ideal for consolidating descriptive language skills and building grammatical confidence in early French learning.

Geography - Why do people live near volcanoes?

This unit is designed to support pupils as they investigate the geographical processes behind volcanic activity and why communities choose to settle near these natural features. It introduces key vocabulary such as tectonic plates, magma, shield volcano, and composite volcano, while explaining the structure of the Earth and the different types of volcanic eruptions. Pupils explore the risks posed by living near volcanoes, including eruptions and earthquakes, alongside the benefits such as fertile soils, geothermal energy, and tourism. This unit strengthens pupils' locational knowledge and deepens their understanding of the relationship between people and their environments.

๐Ÿ’ป Computing

In Computing, children use the Purple Mash scheme of learning. Children will develop their skills in using technology safely and effectively, learning about coding, digital creativity, and online safety.
